Umananda Temple and River Island

Umananda Island Assam Tourist Spot - Car Rental

The smallest river island in the world, Umananda Island is a place with legends aplenty, a place where man and the wilderness co-habit in peace and serenity. Umananda Island lies at the heart of the Mighty Brahmaputra River which flows through the middle of the city of Guwahati.

Umananda Island is a beautiful, calm and serene destination on which an ancient Shiva Temple was built by the Ahom King Gadadhar Singha in the year of 1694. The island is related to Siva according to Kalika Purana.

Also known as Bhasmachal, the legend of this place denotes it to be the place where Lord Kamdev ( who is the Lord of Love) was burnt into ashes by the third-eye of Lord Shiva when the former tried to disrupt his meditation. The major attraction of the island is the Umananda Temple which is a Lord Shiva temple and a place for Hindu devotees. Umananda Temple along with the main deity of Shiva has other sculptures of Hindu gods such as Ganesha, Vishnu, Surya and Parvati.

This place is also known for its golden monkeys and is one of the two place where the Golden Langurs are found in India. The Golden Langurs are known to be one the most endangered monkey species in India hence they are one of the prime tourist attractions of this island.

To reach the Umananda temple , one has to cross the river in a boat. One can reach there from Guwahati and North Guwahati by boats and larger steamers. These boat services are available from the popular Kachari ghat. Ferry services are available from 7 am in the morning to 5 pm in the evening.
