Meghalaya is one of the few states in the Northeast India that is home to various caves and caverns. The caves seen in Meghalaya are mostly limestone and sandstone caves and naturally formed. Tourists come to Meghalaya from all over the world to visit these natural caves and caverns. We are listing the 3 most popular tourist destinations in Meghalaya known for their caves.
- Mawjymbuin Cave – The Mawjymbuin cave is made of calcareous sandstones is 209 metre high and never fails to astonish the tourists. The serenity and picturesque backdrop of Mawsynram village with steep and sliding slopes, rolling green mountains and ear-piercing but elegant waterfalls add glory to the place. Years of weathering ,dripping of mineral enriched liquid and deposition of Calcium Carbonate has given rise to many magnificent stalagmites inside the cave. The 4m high, 50 metre wide entrance chamber is awe-inspiring.
- Mawsmai Cave – This is no ordinary place on earth. These are limestone caves of Meghalaya. While there are more, this one is the most popular and easily accessible by road. So if you are in or around Shillong/Cherapunji, do visit these. It takes 14 minutes to go and come out of the cave, so unless you are severely claustrophobic, do go. They have good lighting inside and ensure a steady flow of air. At times, people act funny and try to overtake others. So best is to let those in a hurry, go ahead. After all, you have made an effort to reach there, so why hurry a 14-minute walk.
- Arwah Cave – This is a ‘newer’ natural cave in comparison to the Mawsmai Cave in Cherrapunji (Sohra) as per the locals. This cave is a huge natural cavity formed underneath earth’s surface and referred to as “Shella formation of Jaintia Group” alluding to the location around Jaintia hills. This cave also has natural limestone derived stalactites and stalagmites similar to Mawsmai cave, but the major difference here is the presence of fossils from the Palaeocene era (about 5.5-6.5 crore years ago) belonging to Mollusca (seen in pic attached).
- Mawmluh Cave – The Mawmluh Cave also locally known as the Krem Mawmluh, is one of the longest caves in the Indian subcontinent. There are multiple entries to this cave. Unlike the Mawsmai Cave, the Mawmluh Cave is much more difficult to approach inside for travelers which makes it a little less popular among the rest in the list.
Feel free to indulge yourself in a geological discovery tour by visiting these fascinating caves which are gaining popularity every passing day. A reason for their increasing popularity is the ease of access to these caves that makes them popular among children and elder tourists visiting the place alike.
